AI and Mental Health: A New Kind of Support?
Mental health support is evolving rapidly. Artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer merely a buzzword; it is increasingly playing a significant role in how individuals manage their well-being. From chatbots providing emotional check-ins to applications that track mood patterns, AI tools are becoming increasingly prevalent in daily life.
A recent article by Bernard Marr highlighted 14 innovative AI mental health tools that are already making a difference. It is worth paying attention to them.
A Few Worth Noting
Woebot – a friendly chatbot that employs Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques. You chat with it daily, and it helps you identify unhelpful thinking patterns and shift your mindset. It is evidence-based, quick, and available 24/7.
Earkick – This app employs your voice and behaviour patterns to discern how you’re genuinely feeling, even when you’re not expressing it directly. It provides insights that can help you recognise triggers and track progress over time.
Ellie – a virtual therapist that interprets your tone of voice and facial expressions. It is designed primarily for assessments, but it demonstrates how advanced the technology is becoming.
Others, such as Headspace and Heartfelt, are beginning to integrate AI into guided meditation, coaching and psychological support.
Where Does Coaching Fit In?
AI tools aren’t meant to replace genuine human connection; instead, they can be beneficial between sessions. Here’s how they might assist:
Support between sessions: At times, issues may arise during the week. AI tools can provide a measure of structure or reassurance in those moments.
Insight tracking: Mood and stress levels can be monitored over time, aiding in the identification of patterns that may not be immediately apparent.
Accessible support: Not everyone can immediately access therapy or coaching. AI can provide something in the meantime.
That said, these tools aren’t suitable for everyone. They can be beneficial for mild anxiety or stress, but they’re not intended for complex or high-risk situations. Although they’re becoming more intelligent, they can’t genuinely replace a conversation with someone who sees you, hears you, and understands the broader context.
